CALGARY - The Calgary Stampeders are hoping to mine another small school for quarterbacking gold.
Steve Gachette has the Southwest Baptist University records for passing yards (459) and touchdown passes (six) in a single game and now he will get a shot in the CFL.
The SBU Bobcats may play in NCAA Div. II, but the Stamps have had success with small-school quarterbacks in the past, most notably Dave Dickenson when he came out of the University of Montana.
The Stamps announced Friday Gachette will compete with draft pick Brad Sinopoli and possibly receiver Reggie McNeal for the third QB slot behind Henry Burris and Drew Tate.
With both starting cornerbacks gone from last season, there will be a competition to replace Dwight Anderson and Brandon Browner during this year’s training camp.
The Stamps added three players to the mix Friday with the signings of import defensive backs Marcus Jemison, Jay Leggin and Daren Stone.
Jemison is a product of Grambling State after red-shirting for a year at Auburn (2008).
Leggin played both receiver and defensive back in two seasons at Eastern Washington University.
Stone spent four seasons with the University of Maine, but he has NFL experience with the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys.
