On the surface, Rob Maverís rookie season looks like a strong one.
The Calgary Stampeders kicker leads the CFL in points scored, has hit on 76.7% of his field goals and replaced a steady veteran.
But there is something nagging at him.
Going 2-of-9 on field goals longer than 40 yards is something that burns the Guelph Gryphons product.
ďDisgusted about it,Ē Maver said when asked about his long-range percentage. ďAs far as Iím concerned, this is the worst season Iíve had as a football player. Iím not happy about it.
ďI donít feel the stats reflect my talent at all.Ē
Maver went on a run of nine straight kicks before missing from 44-yards out in the 55-24 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Friday at McMahon Stadium.
He said he just got under it and the ball came up short, giving Marcus Thigpen the chance for a 112-yard TD return.
The two field goals Maver made from long range were in the same game (45-yarders in Week 5 against Winnipeg), and most of the misses came in blowout wins.
ďI canít wait for playoffs,Ē Maver said. ďI like playing in close games. Itís a lot more fun. Kicks mean a lot more in those games. I feel I play much better in those environments. Iím looking forward to it. Iíve never had the chance to play for a championship in football before.Ē
THELWELL WANTS THIRD RING
Even at age 37 and playing a smaller role, donít expect Ryan Thelwell to announce his retirement before the off-season, if at all.
Thelwell made a remarkable comeback from a torn Achilles last season but heís a bit player with the Stamps offence right now, catching just 11 passes for 116 yards and one TD.
The receiver isnít ruling out a return next year, but will have talk with head coach John Hufnagel once the year ends.
ďIím on fumes but thereís a little bit left in the tank,Ē said Thelwell, adding a Grey Cup win would make it easy to walk away. ďI have two daughters and a son on the way. I have two Grey Cup rings. If I can end with three rings, for the three kids, that has something to do with it. After we win, ask me the question again.Ē
Stamps RB Jesse Lumsden will be installed on kickoff returns this Friday against the Blue Bombers, rotating with Landan Talley Ö Stamps C Tim OíNeill will be back as the starter this week, replacing Rob Lazeo, who took the job four games ago Ö Stamps DB Milt Collins (shoulder) and DL Miguel Robede (concussion) will be out this week.
