Lazeo enjoys soggy weather

It’s still technically summer, but you wouldn’t have known it from watching the Calgary Stampeders practice Friday.

That hardly mattered to west coast native Rob Lazeo.

The cold, rainy workday reminded the Abbotsford, B.C., native of home.

“I bug the guys from Florida and California,” said the 13-year CFL veteran. “This is liquid sunshine. It keeps the big guys cool.”

The Stamps cut practice short by about 40 minutes, and many of the Americans sprinted harder to the locker-room when it was done than they did in drills.

The team is actually starting to get used to performing in ugly weather, and they haven’t even hit Labour Day yet. Last week’s 27-22 victory over the B.C. Lions came on a drizzly, misty night at Empire Fields.

‘His ’stache is trash’

A handful of Stampeders modelled the retro jersey the team will wear Sunday against the Eskimos, but punter Burke Dales sported an ugly look.

Several Stamps are going retro by growing mustaches and sideburns for the game. Dales has a pencil-thin one that teammates were mercilessly mocking Friday.

“Burke is just like that Just for Men commercial,” said defensive lineman DeVone Claybrooks. “His ’stache is trash. His beard is weird.”

Dales agrees.

“The ’stache is horrible,” he said. “I can’t wait to shave it off one second after the fourth quarter ends.”
