Hughes' MRI just a precaution

The physical for Charleston Hughes yesterday included a MRI to check out his foot.

But Calgary Stampeders GM/head coach John Hufnagel says it’s all precautionary for the defensive end.

“We’ve got to make sure it’s right,” Hufnagel said yesterday. “We’ll see the results of that and hopefully get him on the roster in the near future. What ‘near future’ is, I can’t really determine at this time.”

Hughes suffered a foot injury while in camp with the Philadelphia Eagles.

He returned to Calgary in time to watch Monday’s Labour Day victory over the Edmonton Eskimos.

The 24-year-old was second on the Stampeders with 66 tackles last season and tied for the lead with five sacks.

It’s possible the Stampeders are looking to sign Hughes to a long-term contract, since he returned to Calgary for the option year of his deal.

“When a player is injured, you’d like to find out as much as you can before you make decisions. That’s all,” Hufnagel said. “I’m not alarmed. It’s more precautionary and to make sure the foot is right.”

Hufnagel had other good news after Monday’s game, there are no new injuries expected to sideline any players.

Receiver Nik Lewis had a sore knee after being decked when Edmonton attempted an on-side kick in the waning moments, and punter Burke Dales battled through a sciatic nerve issue.

“He felt a lot better today. I’m expecting him to be fine for the game,” Hufnagel said of Dales.

The midway point of the season also means players can be taken off the nine-game list, but it doesn’t appear the club will have any reinforcements from there.

Receiver Ken-Yon Rambo (knee) is done for the season and DB Brandon Smith (knee) isn’t expected back, either. Non-import receiver Jabari Arthur (broken foot) was expected to be nearing a return at this time, but now Hufnagel isn’t so certain.

“The day he left practice, he hasn’t been able to return,” he said. “We got some more tests done, and I’m not as confident now as I was two weeks ago about his immediate return.”
