Possible return of Hughes doesn't threaten Willis

Help could be on the way for the Calgary Stampeders, and that excites Odell Willis.

But what if that helper takes his starting spot?

Defensive end Charleston Hughes could return to the Stamps once he clears NFL waivers tonight, but Willis isn't concerned.

"Him coming back would be great for us," said the 24-year-old, who leads the team with six sacks but has none in the last three games.

"If he came back and took my spot, I wouldn't look at it as bad. I would look at it as I can learn from him because he played in this defence."

Hughes spent his last week with the Philadelphia Eagles hobbled by foot and hand injuries and would be unlikely to even get into action next Friday for the Labour Day rematch in Edmonton.

Hughes was second on the Stamps last season with 66 defensive tackles and tied for the lead with five sacks.

HUF HAPPY FOR BUONO

Stampeders head coach John Hufnagel placed a call yesterday morning to Lions coach Wally Buono to congratulate him on tying Don Matthews' record for all-time coaching wins. The Lions beat Montreal 19-12 Friday night in Vancouver.

"I'm excited for him," Hufnagel said about his former mentor. "I'm glad it is happening for him. When he breaks the record, I hope to congratulate him over the phone and not shaking his hand."
