Quarter-by-quarter

First quarter

How's that for a quick start? After taking the opening kickoff, the Alouettes were down the field seemingly in an instant, with a five play, 81-yard drive capped off by a 37-yard touchdown reception -- a one-handed grab at that -- by Kerry Watkins.

Calgary answered with a two-and-out (lost yardage during the series, to boot) and the Als took possession at their own 51-yard line. Another five-play drive took them into the endzone, capped by Avon Cobourne's 10-yard major to make it a 14-0 lead for the visitors.

The Stamps again went two-and-out -- at that point, they only had eight yards of total offence, all rushing -- which led to Damon Duval's 48-yard field goal to make the game a three-score difference.

Calgary finally earned a first down on its third series, which came by the slimmest of margins on a third-down quarterback sneak, but punted the ball away a third time.

Second quarter

Calgary's defence started to stem the bleeding, at least in the yardage-allowed department, but the offence's inability to sustain anything again meant favourable field position for Montreal.

After a short drive, Duval made it a 20-point game with a 36-yard field goal.

Titus Ryan provided the spark the Stamps truly needed, a massive 104-yard return on the ensuing kickoff that finally put the hosts on the board.

Another special-teams play soon after put Calgary back in the game.

Wes Lysack blocked a Montreal punt, which put Calgary only 31 yards away from the endzone. A short drive ended with a three-yard strike from Henry Burris to Jeremaine Copeland and it was a 20-14 contest.

The momentum came back to Montreal's side when Ryan fumbled near midfield, dropping the ball after being drilled by Anwar Stewart.

It led to Duval's third field goal (32 yards) of the game, and a single on the ensuing kickoff.

Duval hit another field goal, a drive set up by Larry Taylor's 59-yard punt return, but a 34-yard field goal by Sandro DeAngelis put the score 27-17 at the half.

Third quarter

Tray Blackmon's forced fumble -- Montreal's Jamel Richardson dropped it -- gave Calgary another opportunity to pull closer. The Stamps took advantage of a series that started only 20 yards away from pay dirt, a drive that ended with a Burris four-yard touchdown run.

Another turnover for Calgary's favour -- Milton Collins grabbed the interception after Brandon Browner deflected the pass -- led to a 41-yard field goal by DeAngelis and tied the game 27-27, which set the stage for the final period.

Fourth quarter

A fifth field goal by Duval, 13 yards, restored Montreal's lead. He completed his six pack with a 37-yard field goal to gave Montreal a six-point edge with exactly 10 minutes remaining.

Still, Calgary wasn't out, but the Stampeders shot themselves in the foot twice to decide the outcome.

Calgary was threatening to finish a 90-yard drive, but Burris threw off his back foot into the endzone and it was intercepted by Mark Estelle.

However, another blocked punt -- Tristan Black this time -- gave Calgary the ball back at Montreal's 23 yard line. This time, Burris fumbled, which led to a 81-yard return for a touchdown by Chip Cox.

THREE STARS

1. Alouettes RB Avon Cobourne -- There weren't exactly big numbers posted by anybody, but the Alouettes ball-carrier had a workmanlike rushing game near 100 yards and also a couple of receptions.

2. Stamps WR Titus Ryan -- Sure, he fumbled one away, but a 104-yard kickoff-return touchdown and a handful of a catches made him a threat.

3. Alouettes K Damon Duval -- Was perfect on the night with six field goals, two converts and two kickoff singles -- good for 22 points.

WHY THE STAMPS LOST

A horrible start offensively resulted in a 20-point deficit. Great plays by the special teams -- a kickoff-return touchdown and a pair of blocked punts -- helped bring the Stampeders back into the game, but a pair of drives stalled within the red zone.

CATCH OF THE GAME

Montreal's first drive of the game ended on a positive note -- with a fantastic grab. Alouettes R Kerry Watkins was covered well, but made a one-handed grab for a 37-yard touchdown.

HIT OF THE GAME

Calgary receiver Titus Ryan was trying to zip away after the catch in the middle of the second quarter, but was rocked by Anwar Stewart and lost the fumble.

KEY STAT

111 -- Calgary's total offence, 29 passing and 82 rushing, in the first half. Their net offence was a paltry 99 yards.
