Renaud battling buddy

As a fan at last year's Grey Cup, Mike Renaud had no way of knowing one of the players he was rooting for would eventually become his competitor again.

The former Concordia Stingers punter had just completed a season in Germany with Monchengladbach and was content to cheer on former university teammate Burke Dales as the Calgary Stampeders beat the Montreal Alouettes.

Little did Renaud know the Stamps were having trouble getting Dales to sign a contract extension.

Shortly after the Cup win, the Stamps called. Renaud signed in February as Dales hit free agency.

For about a month, it appeared Dales would go elsewhere and Renaud wouldn't have any competition when training camp opened.

"I wasn't naive enough to think it was going to stay that way," Renaud said.

"I knew there would be stiff competition between me and Burke or someone else. I knew it wouldn't be handed to me."

As camp gets underway today at McMahon Stadium, Renaud is reminded of his freshman year of college, when he was the newcomer and Dales the established punter.

It will be tough for Renaud to unseat Dales for the job, but he will give it a good shot.

Hie goal is to look good and hope he can get a chance during the pre-season games.

"I can't worry about all that stuff," Renaud said. "You can't drift into thinking where you will be or what will happen.

"I just have to focus on every punt and doing my best. They will find a place for me, hopefully here in Calgary, but if not, somewhere else."
