Burke Dales kicked around the idea of signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

But when push came to shove, the veteran CFL punter elected to stick with the Calgary Stampeders.

The Grey Cup champions announced yesterday Dales is returning to the club after reports last month had him close to inking a deal with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

"I'm just glad to be back with the Stamps," Dales said. "This team has become a family for me, Calgary is home and I'm very excited to be back.

"I can't wait for the season to get started and I'm looking forward to competing for another Grey Cup."

The Stamps recently added Canadian punter Mike Renaud to the roster in anticipation of losing Dales in free agency.

"We're happy to have Burke back with the Stampeders," said the club's GM/head coach John Hufnagel. "He had a very good 2008 season and steadily improved as the season went on.

"I'm sure we'll see more of the same in 2009."

Last year, Dales played in all 18 regular-season games, in the West Final and in the Grey Cup.

He averaged a career-high 46.1 yards per punt and led all CFL punters with a 38.1 net yards-per-punt average.

Dales initially joined the Stamps in 2005 and spent four seasons with the club before becoming a free agent after Calgary's 2008 championship season.
