WHEN THE STAMPS RUN

The home-side's offensive line will be put to the test. Both LT Ben Archibald and LG Jesse Newman missed the season finale with injuries, and both are key to opening holes for Joffrey Reynolds. The CFL's leading rusher had 264 yards in two-plus games against the Leos this season. He only had one carry in the season finale, but was key in two wins.

WHEN THE STAMPS PASS

Ken-Yon Rambo will be the go-to guy. In three games against the Lions this season, Rambo had 323 yards for a 20.2-yard average. The fourth-year Stampeder led a potent passing attack that let quarterback Henry Burris go over the 5,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. He does it by spreading the ball around aside from Rambo.

WHEN THE LIONS RUN

Rookie running back Stefan Logan will face the stingiest run defence in the CFL. The Stamps allowed just 89.7 yards per game along the ground. In the season finale, Logan had 224 yards from scrimmage and was by far the best player for the Lions in a loss to the Stamps. Logan can be shifty and tough to locate, so this is a great battle.

WHEN THE LIONS PASS

The No. 1 matchup to watch is Lions star slotback Geroy Simon against Stamps defensive halfback J.R. Ruffin. On paper, this is lopsided in favour of Simon. Ruffin missed all but five games last season with a knee injury, and only worked his way back onto the practice roster in September. With an injury to Lenny Walls, Ruffin makes his first appearance this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Both teams have great kicking. Stamps veteran Sandro DeAngelis is the CFL's all-star placekicker, while punter Burke Dales won the title for net yardage. Lions veteran Paul McCallum does a great job of directional punting and had one of his most accurate seasons in terms of field-goal kicking. The difference is Ian Smart, who is a strong return specialist.

INTANGIBLES

This is the Stamps first visit to the West final since 2001, and only one player remains from the team that won the Grey Cup that season. The past three seasons, the Stamps have made first-round playoff exits and have 17 players in their first playoff games. The Lions have the same lineup that won the West semifinal last week against the Roughriders.
