Cornish king of the called shot

Babe Ruth's called shot is the stuff of legends.

Stampeders backup running back Jon Cornish is making some noise of his own with what he refers to as a 'house call.'

In the regular-season finale against the B.C. Lions, the same outfit the Stamps will face in Saturday's West Division final at McMahon Stadium (2:30 p.m., TSN), Cornish made good on a promise to dart into the endzone on a play he sold as a sure-thing.

"He guaranteed it," marvelled Stamps head coach John Hufnagel the next day. "I guess he made a statement in the offensive meeting room. I wasn't involved in the meeting, but (offensive co-ordinator) George Cortez came into my office after the meeting and said 'You won't believe ...' "

Cornish' penchant for predicting majors dates back to his college days at Kansas.

"In my junior year, when I wasn't quite the starter yet up to about halfway through the season, I called 100% of the touchdowns that I scored," he said. "Every single one, I told my running backs coach that I was going to score. It'd be like 'House call!' and then I'd score."

You can guarantee the Lions will be keeping a close eye on Cornish when he's on the field Saturday. When the Lions visited McMahon two weeks ago, the back had 53 yards on seven carries -- just two yards shy of a career-high.

Cornish didn't participate in practice last week and was wearing a walking boot on his left foot. He claims a Lions defender -- he won't reveal his name -- intentionally twisted his ankle, but insists he'll be back to full-speed Saturday.

As if he needed any more motivation for a match against the team that passed on his rights in the 2006 CFL draft, when he was plucked by the Stamps in the second round.

"For me personally, the fact that I'm from Vancouver and the fact that I was left undrafted by (the Lions) who had three picks in the first round," the New Westminster native responded when asked about the root of his distaste for his hometown team.
