Historical showdown, to boot

The first meeting pitted the most accurate kicker in CFL history against the most accurate in NFL history.

And the CFL star came out with the better night, going 4-for-4 on field goals along with three extra points, as the Calgary Stampeders won 34-4.

But it was a special night for Sandro DeAngelis to look across and Mike Vanderjagt on the other sidelines playing for the Toronto Argonauts, who host the Stamps in the rematch tomorrow night (5 p.m., TSN).

"It was a lot of fun for me," said DeAngelis, who has made 130 of 156 field-goal attempts in his four-year CFL career.

"I idolized Mike just a few years ago when he was on top of his game in the NFL."

This isn't the first encounter between DeAngelis and Vanderjagt, just the first one on a CFL field.

Before last season started, DeAngelis sought out a visit with Vanderjagt, who finished his NFL career with a 86.5 field-goal percentage.

The two kickers share the same agent, so Vanderjagt had the Niagara Falls, Ont., native over to his Oakville home.

Vanderjagt was cut by three CFL teams before hooking up with the Argos for two Grey Cup seasons (1997-98) and then going to the NFL with Indianapolis and Dallas.

"He did it the hard way," DeAngelis said. "He could have quit after getting cut from the CFL. He kept playing and persevered."
