As part of his weekly preparation, Craig Dickenson posts the bio of the opponent's returner on the locker-room wall.
He tacked up Tony Tompkins' career highlights this week knowing full well that wouldn't be the returner the Calgary Stampeders would face.
"We've prepared for Tompkins with the idea if it's not him, then we'll be prepared for anybody to the best of our ability," said the Stamps special teams co-ordinator about facing the Edmonton Eskimos tomorrow.
Tompkins was a healthy scratch last week when the Eskimos lost to the Saskatchewan Roughriders 54-14 in Regina and one of the crucial plays was a mistake made by Tompkins' replacement, Tyler Ebell.
On a punt return, Ebell let the ball bounce around the turf long enough for punter Jamie Boreham to run down and recover it.
So this week, the Eskimos have worked Canadian receiver Pat Woodcock as the main returner on both kickoffs and punts.
Although Woodcock was once signed by the New York Giants as a returner, he has only done the job sparingly since returning to the CFL in 2001.
"But I was with him one year in Montreal and he's a good athlete, so he's quite capable of doing the job," Dickenson said.
"I don't know who we're going to see but if we know our coverages well, we should be able to stop whoever is there."
Both the Stamps and Eskimos will look to rebound from disappointing games on special teams because both had kicks blocked last week. Dickenson also respects the creativity shown by his counterpart in Edmonton.
"Scott Squires has done a good job with them," Dickenson said. "They've had an onside field goal and two or three onside punts. They have some decent stuff. Because of that, we've been real sound this week and talked about being real safe, covering all their eligibles or aware of any trick play that comes our way."
Stampeders defensive back Sadrick Williams missed practice yesterday with a groin injury he's been nursing all week, basically ruling him out of tomorrow's matchup. Dwaine Carpenter took all the first-team reps and will likely start in Williams' spot ... Former Stamps DB Jermaine Chatman has resurfaced with the Roughriders.
