For the first time in his CFL career, Burke Dales became a one-man kicking crew.

With fellow punter Duncan O'Mahony out with a back injury and placekicker Sandro DeAngelis nursing an ankle problem, Dales took over kickoffs, plus ran scout team on coverage yesterday.

"I wasn't the Maytag Man for the first time today," said the third-year Calgary Stampeders punter.

"The only thing they haven't done this year is put me in at receiver and I'm a little choked. I need to get two receptions to pass last year's career high."

Dales is locked in a tense battle for the punting job with O'Mahony but has been the only one showcasing his ability the past two days.

Normally special teams coach Craig Dickenson works all three kickers the entire practice so Dales got a lot of one-on-one time yesterday.

"This was the busiest day I've had so far this training camp," Dales said. "I feel good. I'm getting my legs back and I have that oomph back in my step."

O'Mahony hopes to return to practice tomorrow and expects to play Friday when the Stamps head to Saskatchewan for their final pre-season tuneup. O'Mahony doesn't expect missed practice time to hurt his chances.

"It's going to come down to the game and our performance there," O'Mahony said.

DeAngelis has a mild problem with his left (planting) ankle. He should be fine with rest.

ABDULLAH HEADS NORTH

The Stampeders will see a familiar face during future Battles of Alberta. Defensive end Rahim Abdullah surfaced in Edmonton yesterday, signing a free-agent deal after two seasons with the Stamps.

EXTRA POINTS

The Stamps cut imports OL DeMingo Graham OL Daniel Oliphant, WR Keenan Howry, DL Alonzo Jackson, DB Rob Andrews and Canadian OL Chris Cowan yesterday ... The Argonauts released DB Anthony Dorsett.
