J.R. Tolver reached in front of a defender, snagged the Barrick Nealy fastball, turned and dove into the endzone.

The fans at McMahon Stadium went wild.

It may have only been a mock game at Calgary Stampeders training camp but Tolver was pumped to score a touchdown in front of about 700 spectators.

"The crowd added an extra dimension," said the receiver who is trying to win a job with the Stamps. "We've been out here grinding every day and it's hard. To have a few people come out and cheer us it gives you a little more juice."

Tolver is much more experienced than most of the other import receivers at camp. He has spent the past four seasons in the NFL, going from Miami to Carolina to Dallas since graduating from San Diego State.

At 27, he knows each down in training camp is crucial and has made the most of his chance with the Stamps.

The team's receiving corps will be hard to crack but he's making the coaches' decision tougher by the day.

"It's probably harder to make this team than it is an NFL team," Tolver said. "The rosters are much bigger in the NFL and there is an import ratio. You are fighting a lot of battles."

BANNISTER SHOWS SPEED

Calvin Bannister quickly made a strong impression in his first training camp practice. Bannister, a recent cut of the Baltimore Ravens, ran back a missed field goal in the mock game, zipping through traffic almost untouched for about 110 yards.

The defensive back out of Hampton University has 4.4 speed and specializes in man coverage. His size -- 5 ft. 7 in., 180 lb. -- worked against him in earning an NFL job.

CAMERA TIME

Former Edmonton Eskimos QB Jason Johnson made a visit to training camp yesterday armed with a video camera. Johnson, who retired just before the season, is working on a 12-episode documentary show called Gametime.

The program, which will air on TSN later this summer, features profiles a dozen CFL stars about their road to pro football. Johnson came to get footage of Marc Boerigter but the Stamps receiver sat out the mock game with a groin injury.
