Former Stampeder loses cancer battle

The Calgary Stampeders fraternity lost a good guy this week with the passing of former offensive lineman Geary (Doc) Murdock.

Murdock lost a battle with cancer but was a fighter right to the end. He was one of the few active members of the alumni group and even after being diagnosed with the dreaded disease last year, surprised everyone by showing up at a Medicine Hat fundraiser.

When asked why he would do such a thing, the 54-year-old replied in a voice turned raspy by medication that "they expected me to be here and I couldn't disappoint them."

Our condolences go out to his wife Diane and the family.

FLAME NAMES

Nicknames are a part of almost every team in any sport and the Calgary Flames are no different.

Every once in awhile I like to pass on what the guys call each other. Everyone knows Jarome Iginla goes by Iggy and goalie Miikka Kirprusoff is Kipper.

But you might be interested in knowing that Daymond Langkow is called Lanks, Kristian Huselius Juice and if you yell Newf, Dion Phaneuf will respond.

Matthew Lombardi can be either Lombo or Vince while Tony Amonte is Bone and Craig Conroy answers to Connie. Hammer is the tag laid on Roman Hamrlik and Stewie is what they call newcomer Brad Stuart. Robyn Regehr is known as Reggie while Wayne Primeau is Preems and Mark Giordano is simply Gio.

David Moss is either Pete (as in Peat) or Mosser while Stephane Yelle is Sandbox and Jeff Friesen is Pudge. Because of his heritage, Marcus Nilson is Swede while Rhett Warrener is Rhino, Andrei Zyuzin is either Z or Zoo, Darren McCarty is Mac and Eric Godard just Gods.

TEED RIGHT OFF

The word was out that the golf season had already started in the Columbia Valley so I called to book a Monday morning tee time.

Having the week off, it was a given I'd head out there but all hopes of the earliest ever start to the season ended with a forecast for snow flurries. However, both The Springs at Radium and Riverside at Fairmont are off and running, for The Springs the earliest start time since 1994.

Until next week.
