Room for improvement

Coming off their most complete performance of the season, the Calgary Stampeders were a laughing, jovial bunch at practice yesterday.

Fits of laughter replaced the usual tension but head coach Tom Higgins wants his group to take a day off today and come back tomorrow ready to work on some finer details.

The Stamps had four days off after dominating the Montreal Alouettes 41-23 Thursday in which they completed three fakes on special teams.

"It still wasn't ideal," Higgins said. "There are things to improve on. You must have that attitude or else you think you've arrived.

"We can play better. I don't think we'll always get all those things to fall in one game like they did in Montreal. But, we can still play better."

Earlier in the season, if a situation arose where the Stamps had a call go against them such as a the fake field-goal touchdown that was called back, they would let it affect the rest of the game.

It didn't happen this time and Higgins hopes his team won't take the 3-6 Edmonton Eskimos lightly on Labour Day.

"That's a sign the maturity of this team because they didn't let mistakes bother them."

NEW QB IN TOWN: A new pivot was towering over the rest of the quarterbacks yesterday at Stampeders practice. Barrick Nealy, a recent cut of the Minnesota Vikings, joined the practice roster and early thoughts were the 6 ft. 5-in. Texas State product had replaced third-stringer David Corley.

Corley was late arriving back from Cincinnati and walked onto the field at the end of practice. Nealy will be given a chance to compete for the Corley's third-string job but is likely a project for next year. The 23-year-old was playing as a wide receiver with the Vikings.

EXTRA POINTS: As of yesterday, there were 2,100 seats remaining for the Labour Day Classic Monday against Edmonton. That total includes 450 seats available in the family section ... Stamps head coach Tom Higgins is 6-3 in the annual Classic but lost his most recent one last season ... The Stamps will add LB Hakim Akbar back to the practice roster. Akbar was released earlier this season ... The Eskimos could have LB A.J. Gass and special teams demon Will Loftus back from nagging hamstring injuries on Labour Day ... Hamilton named Marcel Desjardins as its GM yesterday.
