Former Calgary Stampeder Larry Ray Willis will serve six months of probation for harassing his ex-girlfriend, a Calgary judge ruled yesterday.
Justice Terrence McMahon said Willis' refusal to walk away from the crumbling four-year relationship left Heather Sych living in fear of the former all-star receiver for the Stamps.
"The verbal attacks can only be described as abusive, crude and, to the victim, threatening," McMahon said, delivering the sentence at Court of Queen's Bench.
"This young lady feared for her safety and wanted out of this relationship."
Willis, 43, was convicted in June of criminal harassment for a series of phone calls to Sych on Sept. 9 and 11, 2004, and one verbal confrontation outside the former cheerleader's apartment as the common-law couple's relationship collapsed.
Crown prosecutor Achilles Grobler said while the stalking charges against Willis weren't as serious as other cases, he should still receive some sort of counselling.
