DAN TOTH -- Calgary Sun

, Last Updated: 10:42 AM ET

SUN THREE STARS:

1. STAMPS R ELIJAH THURMON -- The first-year Stampeder, a free-agent signing from Saskatchewan in the off-season, scored two touchdowns against his former team.

2. STAMPS QB HENRY BURRIS -- The Calgary starter connected on eight of his first nine passes and threw two first-half TDs.

3. STAMPS K SANDRO DeANGELIS -- DeAngelis was good on all six of his field goal attempts

WHY THE STAMPS WON:

Despite squandering a 17-3 first-quarter lead, the Stampeders responded in the second half by building an even greater lead and not letting the 'Riders get any momentum.

GREAT CATCH:

Roughriders FB Cory Hathaway slipped out of the backfield, broke away from linebacker Scott Coe and snatched a bullet pass from Kerry Joseph for a five-yard TD late in first half.

ARMED AND DANGEROUS:

How strong is Henry Burris' arm? He hit a streaking Elijah Thurmon with a perfect pass into a howling wind on the second play of the game for a 73-yard TD.

KEY STAT:

8 of 9 -- Working into a stiff wind in the opening quarter, Henry Burris was nearly perfect, completing eight of nine passes for 162 yards as Calgary opened a 17-3 lead.

OOPS:

The Roughriders fell asleep in the first quarter as the Stampeders faked a punt. Linebacker Brian Clark took the direct snap and carried the ball 13 yards for a first down to set up the team's second touchdown.

NOTABLES:

The Roughriders 1966 Grey Cup championship team was introduced in a pre-game ceremony ... Massive action photos of 'Riders legends George Reed and Ron Lancaster were unveiled on Mosaic Stadium's west exterior prior to the game ... Attendance was 23,942 ... The Stampeders entered the contest with a two-game win streak against the Green and White, having won both games against the Riders last season while the teams will meet three times over a five-week period ... Henry Burris threw the ball into the stands after his third-quarter touchdown and the fans tossed it back onto the field.
