Sandro DeAngelis won another award yesterday but he would trade it in for an Italy victory in the World Cup final.
The CFL special teams player of the week is a nice honour but the Calgary Stampeders kicker was still soaring from Italy's 2-0 semifinal victory over Germany Tuesday.
Italy faces France in Sunday's title game (noon, CTV) and DeAngelis plans on watching the game at the Italian Social Club.
"But if somebody offered me $50,000 or a chance to go to that game, I would turn down the money and go," DeAngelis said.
"Hands down. That's how passionate Europeans are about their soccer."
The sophomore kicker took the player of the week honour after booting the winning 45-yard field goal in a 23-22 victory over the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats last Thursday.
Teammate and fellow Italian Randy Chevrier will be joining DeAngelis at the club.
DeAngelis has long waited for this day.
He was only one year old when Italy last won the championship but he did see the squad collect bronze in 1990.
"I was lucky to live in Italy when the World Cup was going on," DeAngelis said. "Then I went to a game in 1994 in the U.S. when Italy played Mexico. It's an extremely intense situation."
DeAngelis won't have trouble focusing on Saturday's road game against the Roughriders but admits "trying to sleep is going to be tough.
"I just may weep tear of joy if they win."
EXTRA POINTS: With George White healthy and back in action, the Stamps have released import LB Hakim Akbar. The parting was amicable and Akbar would be called back if there are a rash of injuries at linebacker. Akbar was behind Khalid Abdullah and Cornelius Anthony on the depth chart ... DL Terrence Patrick missed yesterday's practice but should be ready to play Saturday.
