Assistants take rides

Those all-nighters spent in front of the editing computer are worth it now and should come in handy as experience at exam time.

Both Dan Dmytrisin and Tom Kanaroski are off to college from the pros. The two assistants for Calgary Stampeders video co-ordinator Ross Folan in 2005 will continue in football this season after earning scholarships this off-season.

Dmytrisin is already at Florida A&M implementing the programs and preparing for the NCAA season, while Kanaroski is staying at home and working with the University of Calgary Dinos.

"They didn't have a video system down here," said Dmytrisin from Tallahassee, Fla. "So I've been implementing the system Ross taught me, which is what most CFL and NFL teams use. We're taking a system that didn't use video to a top-notch program."

Folan's assistants work hard during the CFL season, videotaping practice and helping cut film for coaches. Games are another story as the video office is running all night afterward to get the tapes ready for the next day.

Practice tapes are chopped into offence and defence while each coach gets his unit's plays divided up several ways, which requires a three-man department for the Stamps. Folan's plan is to start a pipeline through his office to universities who need to upgrade their video systems and he is actively looking for new recruits.

Dmytrisin managed to get a scholarship after one season with the Stamps, although it should be noted he had some electronics experience.

"You should have some technological background in computers or video but as long as you have an open mind and are willing to learn, anyone can pick it up," said the 24-year-old. "You also have to love football. You don't get rewarded during the season. You have to get the job done. If you look at the big picture, a chance to win the championship is huge."

For what Dmytrisin gives Flordia A&M, Folan believes the scholarship is worth it.

"This is a steal for them," Folan said. "The best thing about this is he becomes part of that football lifestyle that you don't get here. At Florida A&M, it will be an amazing experience every Saturday."

ESKS ADD TO ROSTER: The Eskimos added to their training-camp roster by signing defensive lineman Dorsett Davis and defensive backs Roosevelt Williams and David Young yesterday.
