CALGARY STAMPEDERS AT B.C. LIONS, 8 P.M., RADIO: CHQR 770 AM

LAST SEASON:

Calgary (4-14) was last in the West Division and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season. B.C. (13-5) finished first in the West Division and beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West final but fell to the Toronto Argonauts in the Grey Cup.

WHO'S NEW:

* CALGARY -- DL Rahim Abdullah (Edm); QB Henry Burris (Sask); DL Randy Chevrier (NFL); WR Jeremaine Copeland (Mtl); QB Jason Gesser (NFL); DB Anthony Malbrough (Ott); WR Ken-Yon Rambo (NFL).

* B.C. -- DB Barron Miles (Montreal), OL Moe Elewonibi (Wpg), OL Sherko Haji-Rasouli (Mtl), WR Sherrod Gideon (Ott).

WHO'S GONE:

* CALGARY -- WR Albert Connell (released); WR Wane McGarity (released); QB Khari Jones (released); DL Antwone Young (failed physical); DB Omar Evans (traded to Winnipeg).

* B.C. -- WR Chris Brazzell (Hamilton); DT Cameron Legault (Ottawa); DL Marc Pilon (Ottawa); QB Spergon Wynn (Winnipeg); OL David Heasman (released); DB Da'Shann Austin (Ottawa); DL Mawuko Tugbenyoh (released).

WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

* CALGARY -- No. 1 pivot Henry Burris wants to get some work in with the offence and could play up to three quarters of this game. He isn't happy with the sloppy, rain-soaked opening exhibition contest when he went 5-for-16 passing. Backup quarterback Jason Gesser will relieve Burris when he's satisfied with his play and will carry the load the rest of the way.

* B.C. -- The quarterback controversy still rages in Vancouver but this time it's about who is healthy enough to play. Casey Printers is limited by a toe injury and prospective third-stringer Jarious Jackson went down with a hand problem, leaving Dave Dickenson and Buck Pierce to possibly split the action.

STAMPS POSITIONAL BATTLES:

* OFFENCE -- With the quarterback and running back battles basically settled, the biggest question remains in the receiving corps. The likes of MarTay Jenkins, James Terry and Ken-Yon Rambo will try to stick to any pass that comes their way because a drop might mean the door.

* DEFENCE -- Denny Creehan's personnel is basically together for starting positions. Rookies Clay Roberson and Terrence Patrick are duking it out for a backup DL job. Jude Waddy, Cornelius Anthony and Trey Young are in the mix for backup import LB spots. Nate Terry, Rashard Anderson and Damony Simmonds will all get time to prove they should stick around as reserve DBs.

Catch all the action tonight on QR77. Jay Donald and Billy Powers will have the pre-game show at 7 p.m. Mark Stephen provides the play-by-play with colour work by Greg Peterson. Join Jay Donald and Billy Powers for the post-game show.
