As expected, the Calgary Stampeders yesterday announced a one-year contract extension for defensive co-ordinator Denny Creehan. Creehan's 3-4 defensive scheme was lauded last season as one of the best units in the CFL and his return for 2005 was an obvious priority for GM Matt Dunigan.

Despite an outstanding showing from the front seven, Creehan said he expects to make some changes in the secondary for next year.

"We've got a couple of problems to solve in the secondary but now we're not starting from scratch next year," Creehan said yesterday over the phone from Florida, where he's vacationing with his family while also doing some scouting.

"If they all come back and stay healthy -- that's a key -- we should be even better next season."

A crucial component for Creehan's defence is the re-signing of free agent import linebacker John Grace. Grace recorded seven quarterback sacks and three interceptions in 2004, earning the CFL West Division nomination as outstanding defensive player.

Creehan said he'd also like to add another defensive lineman to beef up the Stampeders' 3-4 scheme.
