You're fired!

Michael Feterik is lucky Calgary Stampeders fans aren't empowered to fire the team's owner.

It seems they're just itchin' to pull the trigger.

That was just one of the resounding messages Stamps faithful sent the CFL club through the several hundred responses to the Sun's annual You Be The Boss poll.

The embattled owner has angered 71% of readers who now want to see him fired after three ill-fated seasons holding the franchise's purse strings.

Granted, the current proprietor can't be evicted but the groundswell of support for a change in ownership could be just one reason Feterik is reportedly trying to sell the club.

You Be The Boss is hardly a scientific study of Stampeders fans but it certainly gauges their undying passion for the local club.

The Sun's fax machines were kept humming and website monitors running as responses flooded in over the past two weeks.

Other than venting their frustrations on Feterik, Stampeders fans are surprisingly patient and understanding about the club's seemingly endless plight after a third straight season without a hint of a playoff berth.

We even received one survey from the Stampeders ticket office, suggesting personnel within the organization want their voices heard.

In the Four Burning Questions portion of the poll, 86% said it was a mistake to give Matt Dunigan both the GM and head coaching duties, while a landslide of criticism (83%) was levelled toward Feterik, blaming him for the team's poor record in recent years.

Last year, 82% of respondents suggested he sell the franchise, a substantial non-confidence vote.

After a 4-14 record in 2004, the third straight without a playoff berth, a surprisingly high number of fans (69%) say they'd like to give GM/head coach Matt Dunigan another shot next season.

A year ago, just 59% of the fans polled wanted to keep head coach Jim Barker after a 5-13 campaign.

The father-son coaching tandem of defensive co-ordinator Denny Creehan and son Casey also received a vote of confidence, with 93% of respondents insisting they return in 2005. The result is notable because both are without a contract after January, while the elder Creehan could draw interest as a head coaching candidate or co-ordinator in another CFL city.

Special teams co-ordinator Trey Junkin drew the least support from the voting fans, with 38% suggesting the former NFLer should be sent packing after his rookie season coaching in Canada.

Fans are also being generous with Feterik's money, offering raises to most players with linebackers John Grace, a free agent this off-season, and Canadian Scott Coe, earning high praise.

A whopping 71% of the vast majority of fans who want to see Grace re-signed (91%) also feel the West Division's nominee for top defensive player should receive a pay hike in 2005.

Receiver Nik Lewis, the West's candidate for top rookie honours, also enjoys overwhelming support with 96% of fans insisting he should return to the Red and White in 2005 while 23% suggest a payroll boost is appropriate.

The recently acquired running back tandem of Joffrey Reynolds and Ronney Jenkins also enjoys fan support, with 95% recommending Reynolds should stay and 93% wanting to keep Jenkins.

One cause for concern is the apparent decline in season-ticket support for 2005. Only 63% of season-ticket holders responding say they will renew their seats for the 2005 campaign (although many claim they'll only open their wallets if there's a change in ownership).

Just 57% of fans are confident the Stampeders will make a playoff appearance next fall for the first time since 2001.
