Losers of five straight, the Stampeders are coming off back-to-back humiliating losses at the hands of the Edmonton Eskimos. Ottawa isn't faring any better, dropping eight of its last nine, including a terrible 31-13 defeat at the hands of the B.C. Lions at home last Saturday.

Calgary has faced the Renegades five times since Ottawa's rebirth in 2001, winning twice, once in overtime, and losing three times.

*CALGARY -- Demetrious Maxie is back on the defensive line, taking the place of Derrick Ford. With D-Max returning to the team from the NFL, Calgary will have three rushing threats in Maxie, Joe Fleming and Sheldon Napastuk. Injuries to three Canadian linebackers have forced a bunch of changes on both sides of the ball. Special teams ace Marc Calixte (hand) and long-snappers Marc Mitchell (concussion) and Joe Bonaventura (ACL separation) are out. Mike Mahoney makes his debut in Mitchell's spot, while Bill Chamberlain, who signed this week, will handle the long-snapping duties and line up at slotback. Rookie S Christian Simmerling takes Calixte's spot and will see plenty of action on special teams. Import RE Wesley Robertson comes back into the lineup for DB Jeremy Pearl.
*OTTAWA -- The 'Gades injury woes continue, with three starters out this week: LB Kai Ellis (ankle), WR Pat Woodcock (dislocated toe) and LB Gerald Vaughn (knee). That means rookie DE Anthony Collier will makes his first start for Ellis, DB Dave Donaldson takes the place of Woodcock and DE John Turntine replaces Vaughn. The good news for coach Joe Paopao is C George Hudson (back), WR Sherrod Giddeon (calf) and DE Keaton Cromartie (ankle) have all recovered from their injuries and return. OL Mike
Homewood, RB Raymonn Adams and DT Pene Talamaivao come off for the trio.

*WHEN CALGARY HAS THE BALL -- The offence has to start scoring points instead of getting scored on. In the past three games, the Stamps offence has allowed at least one interception return for a touchdown, creating a hole for itself because the unit hasn't put up more than one major in a contest since beating Winnipeg Aug. 7. Veteran QB Marcus Crandell needs to protect against the major mistakes that have dogged the team in a five-game losing streak.
*WHEN OTTAWA HAS THE BALL -- Head coach Joe Paopao said the key to success is for his team to dominate the line of scrimmage, even with a patchwork offensive line. Former Stampeder Samir Chahine will start at right guard and centre George Hudson returns to the lineup. Their task? Stop a fired-up Demetrious Maxie and the obvious affect he will have on Calgary's defensive line. The addition of Maxie should put Joe Fleming into single coverage and open up a chance for him to reach QB Kerry Joseph. So the 'Gades will spread the defence with a steady dose of RB Josh Ranek.
