Stamps bulk up receiving corps by signing Levy
By DAN TOTH -- Calgary Sun
The Calgary Stampeders added size to their receiving corps yesterday with the signing of import Darcey Levy.
The 6-ft. 2-in., 207-lb. Levy was on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers practice roster most of this season after spending parts of the last two years on the practice squads of the NFL's Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals.
The former Notre Dame Fighting Irish also played two games with NFL Europe's Amsterdam Admirals.
He'll likely get a look at receiver although he also returns kicks after playing some tailback at Notre Dame.
"Wherever they want to use me, I can return kicks, rush the punter, do anything to help the team win," said Levy, 25, who has dropped some 15 lb. since his college days.
"I actually played running back for four years in college I don't know maybe if I put on a few pounds again," Levy joked.
Levy was only activated for one game in Winnipeg while he spent the rest of the year on the practice roster.
Last season, he pulled a hamstring the second day of camp with the Broncos before being released.
"Speed, size, work ethic, all those things," Stamps GM-head coach Matt Dunigan listed as reasons for bringing the receiver into camp. "I think he's a diamond in the rough."
First-year import receiver John Chestnutt, who was never placed on the active roster, was released.
CRANDELL STILL OUT: Quarterback Marcus Crandell returned to Calgary late Wednesday night after attending his father's funeral but didn't practise yesterday.
"He needed some more time and we gave it to him and we'll continue to give it to him until he's ready mentally and physically," said GM-head coach Matt Dunigan. "When he's ready to play and come back, we'll welcome him with open arms."
WALKING WOUNDED: Injuries continue to hamper the Stamps as WR Wane McGarity and DB Terrence Moore collided yesterday before leaving practice.
Moore suffered a suspected strained MCL while McGarity injured his lower leg.
The remaining walking wounded include: RB Scott Deibert (hamstring), DE Antwone Young (knee), DT Sheldon Napastuk (assorted nicks), OL Taylor Robertson (ankle) and CB Nate Terry (quad). McGarity and Napastuk are expected to play Monday against the Eskimos.
