Let's make a deal
Dunigan ready to entertain offers for QB
By DAN TOTH, CALGARY SUN

REGINA -- If the Toronto Argos are interested in quarterback Marcus Crandell, Matt Dunigan is ready to talk. But as of yesterday afternoon, the Stampeders GM said he hadn't received a phone call from Toronto GM Adam Rita, in need of another pivot after starter Damon Allen suffered a cracked tibia Thursday night in Montreal.

Crandell, the Stamps starter the last four seasons until losing his job three weeks ago to rookie Tommy Jones, was placed on recallable waivers earlier this week and could draw offers but it seems Toronto isn't interested.

"Not really," said Rita, who will turn the ball over to third-year backup Michael Bishop for now.

"I'm not saying that it may not be a possibility but right now (Crandell) isn't at the top of our list."

Dunigan said the 2-5 Stamps have several needs to fill but wouldn't want a quarterback in return.

"We're in the market for a few things," Dunigan said. "If we're going shopping, we're shopping for a few things."

Dunigan again insisted former Stamps quarterback Kevin Feterik, released last season, will not be part of the equation should a roster spot open.

"I have a guy out there who I've been eyeballing for quite some time and if something did happen, we'd have some room to bring another guy in. But it's all just speculation," said Dunigan, adding he expected to hear from Rita.

"We need to get down the road and dialogue would be good in this situation but by no means does it mean we're unhappy with anything we have going on right now in Calgary."

Romaro Miller, acquired by the Stamps from Ottawa in the off-season but released after training camp, was en route to Toronto yesterday from Mississippi and is expected to sign with the Argos today.

Argos coach Kent Austin worked with Miller last season in Ottawa.

Crandell declined media requests yesterday, a wise decision according to Dunigan.

"Pretty heady move on his part," Dunigan said, insisting he did not muzzle his veteran quarterback.

"It takes away from the focus of the football team."

Crandell said last week he expects to play again -- if not in Calgary, in another CFL city.
