Lions look to plug Leak

A different quarterback at the helm of the Montreal Alouettes doesn't mean it gets any easier for the Lions defence.

While Chris Leak starting his first CFL game Friday in place of 17-year-veteran Anthony Calvillo might seem like a downgrade, the players aren't approaching it that way.

"Sometimes it's harder to prepare for somebody that way, that you haven't really seen before," said defensive halfback Ryan Phillips.

"But at the same extent, we can maybe throw some things out there that he probably hasn't seen yet either since he doesn't have that much game experience."

Leak, a Florida Gators alumnus, completed 10 of 15 passes for 99 yards and one interception after Calvillo left a game against Winnipeg two weeks ago with a bruised sternum.

In his only other appearance this year, the 25-year-old made one completion for four yards. Last year, he completed eight for 11 passes and 46 yards with one touchdown in two appearances.

"I'm pretty sure they've worked harder too this week trying to get him as prepared as possible for us," said Phillips. "But the game is different than practice and we've got to make him feel uncomfortable back there."

"We just got to take it to him, and get some hits on him and maybe make him make some bad decisions."

The last time B.C. played Montreal, the Lions stymied the Calvillo-led Als but lost 16-12 at Empire Field.

Anton McKenzie pointed out the positives the defence learned from that game.

"We were flying around and being physical," said the linebacker, who noted they'll need to do the same this time around even with Leak at pivot.

"There's a couple things you might do differently with him, but the main thing is getting in the backfield and disrupting him."

* Lions kick returner Yonus Davis was named CFL Special Teams Player of the Month Wednesday. Since joining the active roster in Week 5, the rookie has registered 18 punt returns for 118 yards and 16 kickoff returns for 365 yards and one touchdown. He has also rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown in nine carries.
