VANCOUVER -- Ryan Phillips wants to make CFL history. The B.C. Lions ball-hawk wants to become the first defensive back to ever win the CFL's most outstanding defensive player award.
At the moment, Phillips leads the CFL with 11 interception returns this season.
"I think it is about time (a DB wins the award)," said Phillips. "And I am not just saying that because it is me.
"If you look at it, we play in a predominantly passing league and for a DB to never have won the award, it is kind of ridiculous to me."
The one knock on Phillips is that he should have made more plays so far this season.
Ironically, his strongest competition for the award will likely come from teammate Cameron Wake (13 sacks).
