Defensive lineman Derek Wake is living the CFL dream.

The former Penn State Nittany Lion was signed by the New York Giants in 2005 and let go last December. He was among three newcomers vying to replace Chris Wilson, who was signed by the Washington Redskins.

Wake and 2006 draft pick Ricky Foley remain on the Grey Cup champions' depth chart and are competing for the 2007 starting job when B.C. hosts Saskatchewan Roughriders tomorrow night at B.C. Place Stadium. It'll be Wake's first chance to play the Canadian game.

"I've lucked into a great situation," said Wake, a 24-year-old from Beltsville, Md.. "I love to win and coming to a team that's established that as the norm, you can't get that anywhere else."

He's competing for a spot alongside rookie of the year Aaron Hunt, top Canadian and defensive player Brent Johnson and all-star Tyrone Williams.

Wake is also enjoying the soggy, late-spring weather that saturated Abbotsford.

"The cooler weather is definitely a blessing, I'd rather be doing that than sweating like a dog," he said.
