Barron Miles is like a fine wine. The 34-year-old safety is not only becoming better with age, but his value to the 8-3 B.C. Lions is rising.

"He's got that natural ability and he can catch," said Lions' head coach and general manager Wally Buono. "As long as he makes plays, what do I care if he's 40 years old?"

Miles has forced three fumbles, made 25 defensive tackles and leads the Canadian Football League with eight interceptions, including a 33-yard touchdown in Aug. 18's win over the Edmonton Eskimos.

"It's the same thing I did last year, it just came at the later part of the season," Miles said. "I just play my game. Sometimes you get credit, sometimes you don't. If you worry about it too much you're going to be a nutcase."

The high school quarterback in Roselle, N.J. starred with the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers as a cornerback and punt blocker.

"I've never coached a better performer," said ex-Nebraska defensive backs' coach George Darlington, now with Louisiana State. "I'm just excited when I see how well he's doing in Canada."

Miles celebrated his 23rd birthday on New Year's Day 1995 with an Orange Bowl and national championship win over the Miami Hurricanes. Drafted 199th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1995, Miles suffered torn knee ligaments in training camp.

He came north to the Montreal Alouettes in 1998 where he was the top East division rookie. A rotator cuff injury sidelined him for 2001, but he recovered in 2002 when the Als won a Grey Cup. After winning the Tom Pate trophy for sportsmanship and community service in 2004, he signed as a free agent with the Lions in 2005.

Miles, inducted to Nebraska's football hall of fame last summer, settled in Cloverdale with wife Jennifer and children Barron II, Raven and Ava and spent this week's bye enjoying the weather and home renovations.

"I'm working on my media room. I want the whole media setup," he laughed. "If you know anybody that has a good deal to install it, I'm looking for people."

All the better to enjoy recordings of his ever- increasing career highlights.
