More than a week after declaring he's not ready to retire, B.C. Lions' president and chief executive officer Bob Ackles inked a contract extension yesterday with the Canadian Football League club.

Ackles, who started as a waterboy before the team debuted in 1954, will be around through the end of the 2008 season.

Ackles rose through the ranks to head the club, but left 20 years ago for 15 seasons as a National Football League executive and one in the XFL.

He returned in 2002 to successfully rescue the Lions.

Son Scott Ackles, who was general manager of 2005's Grey Cup committee, was hired in January as vice-president of operations.

The younger Ackles is a potential candidate to succeed his father should the elder Ackles decide to call it quits after 2008.
