B.C. Lions' head coach Wally Buono yesterday gave Dave Dickenson the nod over Casey Printers to start against the Edmonton Eskimos on Sunday at B.C. Place Stadium.

Buono revealed his decision yesterday in Whalley as the Lions resumed training for the Canadian Football League's western final.

"It's not a reflection on either of the quarterbacks, except for the fact that Dave was our starter for the bulk of the 2005 season," Buono said. "He didn't do anything in my mind to lose his starting position."

Dickenson has played in one quarter since suffering a concussion Oct. 1. He replaced Casey Printers in the third quarter Nov. 5 against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but Printers eventually finished the game. Neither quarterback could muster a touchdown in the 13-12 loss.

"I felt like I put a lot of time and effort in the year and would've been disappointed not to at least get first crack at it," Dickenson said.

Printers said he wasn't surprised by Buono's decision and admitted he's still hampered by shoulder pain.

"I'm still going to be capable of going out and playing," Printers said. "I'm going to be right there for (Dickenson), rooting him on because, hey, the Grey Cup is next week and we want to be playing."

Printers started 2004's western final against Saskatchewan, but Dickenson finished and played the entire Grey Cup loss to the Toronto Argonauts. Printers was the league's most outstanding player last season.

Printers was a surprise starter in Aug. 5's home win over Edmonton when Dickenson arrived at B.C. Place with back spasms. Printers was also the pivot when B.C. lost at Edmonton on tiebreaking field goal with no time left on Oct. 28. Dickenson started Sept. 24 when Edmonton handed B.C. its first loss after 11 straight victories.

"I don't think either one of us is a better player necessarily than the other, we just have different styles," Dickenson said. "Like Wally said, there's a very good chance if we're going to win this we'll need us both."
