The Canadian Football League is in the market for a new director of officiating.

Tom Higgins has left the post, the league announced Thursday.

"It's our understanding that Tom intends to seek a position on the competitive side of football, as a coach, general manager or administrator," CFL commissioner Mark Cohon said. "We thank him for his efforts and wish him the very best his future endeavours."

Higgins, a former CFL coach, won the 2003 Grey Cup as boss of the Edmonton Eskimos. He was hired as director of officiating in 2008.

The CFL said it does not have a replacement in place yet.
