The big story of Week 5 was no doubt the backup or, in the case of Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell, the backup to the backup quarterback.

Four passers who were expected to carry a clipboard all season started games over the last six days, and most of them enjoyed plenty of success.

In fact, the only backup who didn’t win lost to another backup. That’s how good of a week it was for the reserve pivots.

Now, of course, the natural reaction is to try and figure out which of these backup quarterbacks the Ottawa RedBlacks are going to covet four months from now. We need to remember, however, that it’s only one game.

Bombers backup quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie threw for 450 yards in his first regular-season game — it came six months after his surprise start in the 2007 Grey Cup — and got the win. Interestingly, he never won another game.
