Time for CFL to send message about injurious hits
By IAN BUSBY, QMI Agency
If an arm is worth two games, what should a head cost? Certainly, the CFL isn't looking at two instances involving B.C. Lions players that way, but the time is now to set a precedent. When Lions defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell was dinged with a two-game ban earlier this year for an arm-bar attack on Eskimos offensive lineman Simeon Rottier, it sent a clear message intent to injure wouldn't be tolerated. For that, the CFL should be applauded. Now it's time to suspend Hamilton Tiger-Cats Dee Webb the same amount. Webb threw his head into the back of defenceless Lions receiver Marco Iannuzzi's head last Friday in Hamilton in a move that was immediately panned by players and media alike. Iannuzzi's head was the target, and it suffered two impacts on the play -- one from the hit and one from the ground. This is a bright young player with an even better-looking future, so to suffer a concussion is tough to see. It's even tougher to watch when somebody recklessly hits someone in the back of the head. The time is now. Make it stop. ian.busby@sunmedia.ca |
