Campbell says a mouthful

Kelly Campbell is first out of the starting gate in the CFL playoff race.

The Eskimos receiver is the first player to drop a juicy quote to the media regarding the post-season, which opens Saturday.

After scoring a touchdown against Montreal in the final regular-season game on Friday night, Campbell delivered this statement to TSN: "We're giving Montreal something to think about for two weeks."

That quote made its way through the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' dressing room yesterday after that club defeated Hamilton to end the regular season.

MOTIVATION

In Bombers' territory, that quote could add a little motivation to the East Division semifinal crossover playoff game in Manitoba.

The winner of that game between the Eskimos and Bombers advances to the Nov. 15 East Final in Montreal.

But on the public record, very few Bombers are shooting back at Campbell right now. The only significant comment to come from the Winnipeg side is courtesy of Stanford Samuels.

"Sometimes you put a lot of food in your mouth, and it's hard to negotiate all of that," said Samuels. "And sometimes you bite your tongue in the process.

"But Kelly is a cool dude, man. We were real cool when I was in Edmonton. I would guarantee you he's not looking past us.

"They know they have to come in here. And they know they're going to have a dog fight."

PAUSED

Edmonton head coach Danny Maciocia paused for a moment when he heard Campbell's quote yesterday, but didn't seem to be angered.

"He is a confident young man. And I am sure we got a few more just like him," said Maciocia on his rookie receiver.

"I'd like to think Winnipeg has got a confident group, too. They're a very good, very well-coached football club."
