LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- The 2011 World Figure Skating Championships, scheduled for March 21-27 in Tokyo, have been postponed because of the unsettled situation following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The International Skating Union issued a release Monday, indicating that the event could be cancelled altogether.

"The postponement of the event or alternatively the final cancellation is under evaluation," the ISU said in its statement.

After Friday's devastating disasters, it was initially thought the event would continue as scheduled because the Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo was undamaged. However, the further developments regarding the nuclear power plants and advisories by world governments to avoid travel to Japan helped sway the ISU's decision.

"As soon as the situation in this respect has been finalized, the ISU will inform all parties concerned of the decision taken," the ISU added.

The ISU is also considering whether to cancel or postpone the World Team Trophy event, scheduled for April 14-17 in Yokohama.
