CALGARY (CP) - American Shani Davis set a world record in the men's 1,500 metres Sunday at the ISU world allround speedskating championships.
Davis, who trains at Calgary's Olympic Oval, finished in one minute 42.68 seconds, breaking the previous record of 1:42.78 set by teammate Chad Hedrick in 2005.
Hedrick, who was paired with Davis in Sunday's race, finished second in 1:42.85.
Canadian Denny Morrison of Chetwynd, B.C., was third in 1:42.97.
The result leaves Davis with a substantial points lead heading into the final 10,000-metre race at the allround championships. To win, skaters must post the lowest combined times in four distances over two days of races.
