'Wild stuff' has Ben sitting 7th

OTTAWA -- On another day, in another time, Ben Ferreira would have been waving goodbye to the crowd ahead of time.

"It's sports now,'' said the Edmonton skater who sits seventh after the short program as a result of two mistakes.

"I've seen some wild stuff since they went to this new scoring system. It's so new and so untested, you never know. It doesn't take much. It was like me today. A couple little slips ...''

Ferreira didn't fall, so his deductions for two Air Scare type landings were both minus two in the impossible-to-explain new scoring system which replaced the old 6.0 standard after the Jamie Sale-David Pelletier Salt Lake Olympic judging scandal.

He scored 91.6 points.

The third place skater, Shawn Sawyer from New Brunswick, scored 100.37 in the short program. The top three go to the Olympics.

Either way, this will be the final Canadians for Ferreira.

"All I ask is that I skate well in the final. Whatever happens, I want to say goodbye to the fans,'' he said.
