Nathan Last's longest day didn't turn out as well as he'd hoped at the Skate Canada Junior Nationals. Last night at Ste-Foy, Que., the 16-year-old from Cardinal and the Nepean Skating Club placed 14th in the novice men's short program.

About five hours earlier, Last and partner Emily Jamieson skated in the pre-novice pairs free skate final.

They finished eighth in that segment of the competition, and wound up eighth overall. They were seventh after the short program.

Meanwhile, Annie Claire Bergeron-Oliver of the Minto Skating Club stayed sixth in the pre-novice ladies event, but went home with another reason to smile. For the second straight day, she posted a personal best score, with her free skate giving her a 64.39 total.

In other events yesterday:

- Lauren Brown of Pierrefonds, Que., and Cornwall's Derek Green are fifth after the novice dance compulsories, while Tara Forstner of Alexandria stands 10th following the novice women's short program.

- Minto's David Leenen finished ninth overall among the pre-novice men.
