The top of the UFC’s lightweight division just got a little more crowded.

The organization landed one of its long-time targets Wednesday when it signed up two-time Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez. The move capped off a whirlwind 24 hours for Alvarez, who had been released from his Bellator contract on Tuesday.

The quick turnaround was no surprise to Alvarez.

"I think it was a matter of people just knowing what they want," Alvarez told MMAFighting.com on Wednesday. "I think the UFC knows what they want, and I think I know what I want. And I think it's easy to come to an agreement when both people are in the same boat.

“They understand their wants and their needs, and I understand my wants and my needs, and we came to a quick agreement."

Alvarez will be making his UFC debut in a bout against fan-favourite Donald Cerrone at UFC 178, the card that was originally supposed to be headlined by Alexander Gustafsson and Jon Jones’ rematch.

A fight against Cerrone is essentially the UFC lightweight version of being thrown in the deep end
