For weeks, rumours swirled around the MMA world about a potential title fight between Ronda Rousey and the maybe-returning Gina Carano.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the UFC announced that Canadian brawler Alexis Davis would be stepping into the octagon as the next challenger to Rousey’s women’s bantamweight crown.

It came just as suddenly for Davis as it did for everyone else.

“It came together probably about an hour before everyone found out about it,” Davis said. “I got the phone call and I was actually in the middle of training at the time. I was so excited, but obviously I had to keep it quiet before they publicly released it.

“I literally finished and got into the car and started driving back home and my phone started blowing up like crazy. So, I guess I knew it was released.”
