If the six wins Francis Carmont has strung together to kick off his UFC career didn’t do enough to convince the world of his credentials, a win next weekend over Ronalda ‘Jacare’ Souza ought to do the trick.

Souza, the UFC’s No. 2-ranked middleweight contender, has been on the fast track to the top of the division since making his debut in May of last year. He’s a tall task for any fighter, and Carmont knows most experts aren’t giving him much of a chance at UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Mousasi.

“For me, it doesn’t bother me to be the underdog,” said the No. 9-ranked Carmont. “I’ve always actually performed better when people have kind of counted me out. I’m actually really happy going into this fight this way.”

That the fight is set to go down in Souza’s native Brazil certainly won’t help Carmont, who trains out of Montreal with Georges St. Pierre at Tri-Star Gym.
