Icelandic standout Gunnar (Gunni) Nelson is lucky to be alive after a car accident over the weekend.

MMAViking.com reported the UFC welterweight was travelling in the front-passenger seat of a pickup truck with three friends. The truck then unexpectedly slipped off an icy road and rolled down a hill, before landing in Pjorsa, Iceland’s longest river.

According to the fighter’s father and manager, Halli Nelson, all four passengers walked away with only minor injuries.

“Gunnar is fine but he had to have (10 or 11) stitches in his arm,” Halli Nelson told the Scandinavian MMA website. “It’s a glacier river with a very hard current. If the (vehicle) had gone one metre further into the river, it would have hit deep water and the current would have taken it.”
