Cain Velasquez has won the trilogy.

The UFC heavyweight champion battered and bloodied Junior (Cigano) dos Santos in the main event of UFC 166 in Houston Saturday before stopping him in the fifth round. It was Velasquez’s second win over dos Santos in three career meetings.

In many ways, the bout mirrored their second encounter, as Velasquez had his way with dos Santos against the fence. However, this time the Brazilian managed to defend numerous takedown attempts and dish out some punishment of his own, tagging Velasquez with stiff punches.

In the third round, Velasquez dropped the former titleholder with an overhand right to the ear. The NCAA Division I wrestler unloaded with punches, but couldn’t knock dos Santos out.

In the fifth, dos Santos attempted a guillotine choke. Velasquez shoved him off, causing dos Santos’ head to slam into the mat. Referee Herb Dean then called the bout, awarding Velasquez a TKO victory.
