UFC president Dana White banned Rousimar Palhares for life after he failed to release a hold on Wednesday night in a bout after his opponent had given up.
Just 31 seconds into the match in Brazil on Fox Sports 1, Mike Pierce submitted after getting caught in Palhares' heel hook. Palhares continued to apply pressure to Pierce's knee and on Thursday drew the lifetime banishment.
Palhares had previously been suspended for 90 days for holding onto a heel hook in a win over over Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111 after the opponent had submitted. The dangerous move can severly injury a knee or ankle.
The ban takes effect immediately and the UFC will terminate Palhares' contract.
Palhares expressed his feelings on Twitter.
"I always respect the @UFC decisions, but most of most I respect a lot Mike Pierce, so again I never meant to hurt him, just finish the fight.
"I never meant to hurt anyone, as a jiu-jitsu fighter I always seek for the submission, but I would never be evil to any athlete."
