Jake Shields earned his spot back in the welterweight top 10, edging Demian Maia on the judges’ scorecards in the main event of UFC Fight Night 29 in Barueri, Brazil Wednesday.

The split decision — Shields was awarded the win with scores of 48-47, 47-48 and 48-47 — will likely be debated by fans and media members alike, as the first and fifth rounds were extremely close.

Maia got off to a good start, winning the striking exchanges and dragging Shields to the mat. However, following an ill-fated attempt to transition to back control, the former middleweight title challenger found himself flat on the mat. Shields then spent the next two rounds wrestling Maia to the floor, where he chipped away with ground-and-pound.
