Gilbert (El Nino) Melendez aims to succeed where his teammates have failed.

So far, five representatives of Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu have challenged for UFC titles — Gil Castillo (twice), David Terrell, Jake Shields, as well as the Diaz brothers, Nick (twice) and Nate — and each time, the fight camp has come up short.

The last-reigning Strikeforce 155-pound titleholder, Melendez has the opportunity to snap his team’s skid when he challenges lightweight champ Benson (Smooth) Henderson in the main event of UFC on FOX 7 in San Jose, Calif., on April 20. Also on the card, Daniel Cormier meets Frank Mir, Josh Thomson faces Nate Diaz and Jordan Mein takes on Matt Brown.
