The first time Jordan Mein strapped on the gloves as a professional, it was in front friends and family in Lethbridge against another young fighter looking to make his mark.
It didn’t quite go as planned.
Mein fell victim to a first-round rear-naked choke.
The fighter who submitted Mein at the June 17, 2006, Rumble in the Cage bout?
You might know him. It was B.C.’s Rory MacDonald.
Both 16 at the time, the pair of 23-year-olds are now rising stars in the UFC welterweight division.
“It was in my hometown in front of all my friends and family, and I lost, and it was embarrassing,” Mein recalled Tuesday, following an open workout at Champions Creed gym in Calgary. “So I never want that to happen again, and that’s why I’m trying to train hard. Losing is terrible. It sucks. I hate it. I don’t ever want to lose, but it’s a part of the sport.”
Mein (27-8) has done some losing since then — but not lately.
