TORONTO - Michael (Mayday) McDonald is on the cusp of etching his name in the record books.
The 22-year-old standout is set to challenge Renan (Barao) Pegado for the interim bantamweight championship in the main event of UFC on FUEL TV 7 in London, England, on Feb. 16. If he gets the job done, McDonald will go down as the youngest champion in UFC history.
The current record is held by Jon Jones, who captured the light-heavyweight title at age 23.
Though McDonald knows what’s at stake, he said he doesn’t feel any additional pressure, or motivation, to capture UFC gold.
“On a personal standpoint, I don’t care about it,” McDonald said over the phone. “It’s not something for me to think about or focus on. On a business standpoint, it will be good. Anything that’s going to be good for business is something that I look forward to. That is a great accolade to put on a resume.
“I think every fighter needs to have high hopes and believe in their potential.
